Campfire Pizza

The fire was just getting started and Hozier- Too Sweet, was playing over the speakers. The kids were playing down near the woods where they made a little fort that consisted of hammocks, my outdoor rug (they stole so their feet wouldn’t get dirty), and everything that makes them happy.

Head phones, squishmellows, at least 5 different books because who could choose?

I gathered all the ingredients on my little camping tray and called them over to help chop the veggies and make their own individual pizzas for dinner.

How To Make Campfire Pizza

Prep the fire- For this recipe we’ll need a fire pit that has a cooking grate. Allow the fire to burn down until you have a nice bed of hot coals.

Medium, even heat will allow the crust and toppings to cook and not burn.

Steps 1-4 of Campfire pizza recipe. Gathering ingredients, shaping the dough, adding sauce and toppings.

Assemble the pizzas- Give each family member a “plate” of tinfoil. Spray with cooking oil and roll out your pizza dough. For this recipe we used pizza crust/dough that rolled out kind of like those dinner rolls in a can. Making it extra easy!

Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over each crust, leaving a small boarder around the edges.

Top with cheese and your favorite toppings.

Steps 5-8 of Campfire pizza recipe with cooking it over the campfire on tin foil, adding a heat safe cover, allowing to cook.

Cook over the campfire- Once the coals are at the right heat, place the tin foil “plates” over the campfire grates or on a cast iron skillet with lid.

Cook over hot coals for about 8-15 minutes, depending on the heat source, until the cheese is melted and the crust is crisp.

*Note- Since we have a limited amount of space on the campfire grate, you may need to cook these pizzas in batches. For us, we start with the kids pizza and then move on to the adults.

Serve- Remove carefully using heat-resistant gloves and let it cool for a couple of minutes before slicing and serving.

*Note- Having a heat safe lid is what makes the campfire pizza recipe work so well as it acts as an oven. We’ve done this recipe over a cast iron skillet using a lid, and simply using heavy duty tin foil with the lid from our charcoal grill. Just be sure that the lid you use is heat safe and always use heat safe gloves.

Campfire Cooking Tips

Cooking over a campfire can take some practice when it comes to maintaining a medium enough heat/fire that will cook, and not so hot that it burns.

  • Cook over coals, not flames
    • Hot coals provide much more even cooking than direct flames.
  • Use heavy-duty tin foil
    • It helps prevent burning and makes moving the pizza much easier.
  • Keep the lid on
    • The lid acts like an oven and helps the crust cook much better. Use a cast iron skillet with lid (we used our charcoal grill cover over medium coals so it wouldn’t melt or burn)
  • Rotate as needed
    • Cooking over a campfire can be uneven with hot an cold spots. Use long tongs to rotate the pizza every so often for a more even cook.

What to Serve with Campfire Pizza

Since you might need to cook these pizzas in batches, putting out a small tray of veggies and fruit allows for everyone to eat a little something while the rest of the pizzas are cooking.

  • Easy camping side dishes
    • Pasta salad
    • Fresh fruit
    • Cole slaw
    • Salad
    • Watermellon
    • Veggie tray
    • Campfire corn on the cob
  • Camping Desserts

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cook pizza over a campfire?

Yes! Campfire pizza cooks well on heavy-duty foil or in a cast iron skillet with a lid placed over hot coals.

Can I use refrigerated pizza dough?

Absolutely. We’ve used several different refrigerated doughs but recently we tried a roll out crust that was even simpler and tasted just as good.

How do I keep campfire pizza from burning?

Cook over glowing coals instead of direct flames and rotate the pizza as needed for even cooking.

This campfire pizza recipe is a simple enough idea, but it’s a camping dinner that brings everyone together. The older kids can help chop up the veggies while the little ones can help set out silverware, napkins, and drinks.

It does take a minute for everyones pizza to cook in batches over the fire, but that’s half the fun. Tonight we’re not rushing dinner, we’re enjoying everyones company and talking about the adventures we’re about to have on this trip.

So put on the music, set out the chairs, and smile at this family camping memory in the making.
