How to replace a 15 foot patio umbrella canopy, and keep the frame! Easy budget friendly DIY that allows you to keep the base and save some money.

Umbrella canopy replacement. Old to new.

A couple of years ago I wrote about how to spray paint your faded umbrella canopy, and it completely bought us a some more time with this nice, thick fabric.

Unfortunately since it sees a lot of wear with the weather, it only lasted two years after giving it a coat of paint to make it vibrant and gorgeous for the summer.

How To Replace a 15 Foot Patio Umbrella Canopy

A small rip turned into a bigger tear and before I could even think about saving it, it ripped beyond repair. How mad could I be since this umbrella canopy has lasted me at least 5 years?

Not very mad. But I really didn’t want to have to replace the entire umbrella! The frame is solid with no corrosion or problems, and the base is a heavy weight that makes this thing immovable during strong winds.

Before and after. Red ripped umbrella to new blue canopy.

Long story made longer, I didn’t want to throw out a perfectly good frame when all I needed was a canopy.

Silly me didn’t think about finding a replacement canopy for a couple of weeks after it ripped because we (as a society) have forgotten that they use to sell replacement parts!

Vacuum hose have a hole in it? Replacement part. Don’t come after me! In a world filled with planned obsolessessce our mind has slowly been trained to replace and not fix.

Enough of that, let’s get fixing.

When To Replace Only The Canopy and Keep The Frame

A couple of years ago my patio umbrella faded pretty badly but being the budget conscious person that I am, nothing was really wrong with it. So I spray painted it instead. -How to paint a faded umbrella canopy-

It worked out great but since then it’s ripped beyond repair.

  • The frame is still in good condition. No rust or corrosion
  • The crank and mechanism is still in good shape
  • The base is still great, heavy, and I don’t need another
  • Buying just a canopy is more budget friendly

How To Choose a Replacement Umbrella Canopy

I think it’s important to not assume that every umbrella canopy will fit your frame. When looking for a replacement you’ll want to check things such as rib length, rib count, shape and how it attaches.

  • Measure the umbrella

    • Pockets, ties, velcro, clips or screws.
Steps 1-4 on how to replace your umbrella canopy. Remove old canopy by unscrewing the top.

Step By Step Replacement Instructions

Inspect the umbrella frame- Make sure that your frame is still in good condition with no rust, corrosion, or problems with the crank.

Remove the old canopy- What held me back from the simple little DIY was thinking that the umbrella canopy was held on with screws or something difficult to remove. But I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Our particular umbrella had a screw top, so to remove the canopy I lowered the umbrella down and unscrewed each top to remove the canopy.

Steps 5-8 of replacing an umbrella canopy.

Position the new canopy over the top- Position the new canopy exactly center on the top. Screw the top back in place and stand back up. Attach each rib to the canopy.

Open the umbrella slowly- Slowly open the umbrella to make sure it’s in the right position. Ours needed to move slightly, so we lowered it back down and readjusted the top so that it was completely centered and not pulling more to the left or right.

How To Make A New Umbrella Canopy Last Longer

The lifespan of the umbrella canopy really depends on a few different factors. Some being sun exposure, wind, rain, fabric quality, if it’s open in bad weather, if it has a cover or stored during the winter, ect.

There are a lot of little factors that come into play, but if you treat it well you’ll get the most use out of it.

  • Close the umbrella when not in use. Especially during strong winds.
  • Use an umbrella cover to save it from fading and the elements.
    • Be sure to let it dry before covering to prevent mildew
  • Store it during the winter
    • If you live in an area where you get harsh winters, be sure to put it away to get the most out of your umbrella and canopy.
