Over 20 kid friendly refrigerator snack ideas and organization tips. Perfect for busy families wanting a healthier option for on the go.

The kids are going in the pantry and finding the first delicious thing available. That snack is usually chips or something equally not great. Although we do have other healthier alternatives in the house, the chips win because they are just so darn easy to grab and go!

So to change this pattern without having to hide my chips, I needed to find other snack options that are just as easy to grab and enticing enough that they’ll WANT to eat them. I cleaned out the refrigerator and decided to change how we would use the drawers.

With just a bit of fridge organization and the right grab and go foods, anyone can set up a simple kid-friendly snack drawer that encourages independence and healthy choices.

Fresh Fruit (washed and prepped)

  • Apple slices
  • Clementines
  • Grapes (halved for safety)
  • Strawberries and blueberries
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Watermelon and cantalope cubes

Buying seasonal fruit is always the way to go. Of course not all these fruit options need to be stored in the refrigerator but they do last longer in the cooler temperatures. So we’ll put a few on the counter and the rest in the fridge to keep them fresh and easy to see.

*Tip- Store in clear containers for kids can see and grab easily.

Veggie Snacks

  • Baby carrots and hummus
  • Celery and cream cheese
  • Cucumber slices and Ranch dip
  • Cherry tomatoes (halved for safety)
  • Bell peppers and guacamole

*Tip- Add small single served dips to make veggies more appealing!

Protein Packed Snacks

  • String cheese
  • Cheese cubes
  • Yogurt cups
  • Cottage cheese with fruit
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Turkey or ham roll ups

*Tip- Protein keeps kids full longer- great for after school snacks!

Make Ahead Cold Snacks

  • Homemade granola bars -Homemade Recipe Here-
  • Peanut butter energy bites
  • Mini sandwiches or pinwheels
  • Fruit and yogurt parfaits

*Tip- Keeping a few already made sandwiches and parfaits makes them easy to grab on the go. Store parfaits in mason jars or keep reuse small jam and jelly jars for the perfect size!

Psst. I like to freeze PB& Jelly sandwiches and throw them in the lunch box. They thaw out overnight and don’t get soggy!

Fun Treats

  • Fruit cups
  • Pudding cups
  • Jello cups
  • Apple nachos
  • Fruit in a chocolate dipping sauce

Of course we need a few treats every now and then. A chocolate dipping sauce with fruit goes a long way. Along with apple nachos with peanut butter and chocolate chips.

How To Organize a Refrigerator For Easier Snacking

Once a week on grocery day, I take the time to go through the fridge. Old leftovers get discarded, veggies that need to be eaten soon get placed up front, and I even go through my condiments.

I wipe down the shelves and get started putting away this weeks groceries. It isn’t an overly exciting task but one I feel blessed to be able to do. Groceries in the fridge, meals ready to make, and two happy, healthy children finding their favorite snacks throughout the week.

Use clear bins- Using clear bins is a must to stay organized and kids more likely to grab a healthy option that they can see.

Sort by food groups- Place fruit in one bin, proteins in another, and fun treats in a separate one.

Make it easily accessible- Use the lower drawers and place bins on a self that’s easy for kids to reach without help.

*Tip- If you’re just starting out, you might want to skip the extra purchases and keep it simple! A washed out deli meat container works great for dividing up the drawers into different compartments for cheese, cherry tomatoes, and similar snacks.

We even used an old cherry tomato container for ketchup packs we’ve gotten along the way.
