The air is beginning to cool slightly making everyone in this household excited for fall! Now, we do keep most holidays in their proper box, meaning we all scoff a bit when we see fall decorations in August! But I think we can let these little pumpkin shaped treats slide.

Since I had most all the ingredients on hand (marshmallows from our camping trips, cereal for the weekends, pretzel rods, and white chocolate for cookies), the girls and I decided these would be a really fun treat to make on a Sunday afternoon.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

These pumpkin shaped Rice Krispies don’t have to be perfect to actually be perfect! Remember, pumpkins do come in all shapes and sizes, so having them shaped a little different makes them even better.

  • Simple ingrediants
  • Easy to make
  • Kids can help!
  • Perfect for parties
  • No bake dessert

Ingredients for Krispie Treat Pumpkins

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies
  • 3 TBS butter
  • 40 marshmallows
  • food coloring
  • pretzels
  • Optional
    • white chocolate & coconut oil for making the leaves

HOW TO MAKE PUMPKIN SHAPED RICE KRISPIE TREATS

Melt the butter- In a large pot, melt 3 TBS butter over medium low heat.

Add the marshmallows- Add 40 regular sized marshmallows and stir until they are melted and smooth. Remove from heat once they are fully melted.

Steps 1-4 of making Krispy Treat Pumpkins for fall.

Add the food coloring- Add a few drops of orange food coloring until you reach the color you’re looking for.

Add the cereal- Pour in 6 cups Krispie cereal, two cups at a time, and gently stir until all the cereal is coated with the marshmallow mixture.

Let the mixture cool slightly- Let the cereal mixture cool slightly. Allowing it to cool for a few minutes will make it easier to handle and keep its shape. If it’s too warm it will be too sticky to try and shape.

Shape Into Pumpkins

Spray your hands with cooking spray- One of the easiest tricks for shaping Rice Krispie pumpkins is to lightly spray your hands with cooking spray.

Steps 5-8. Mixing the marshmallows, rolling them into balls, and adding decorations.

The marshmallow mixture is sticky, and the cooking spray helps keep it from sticking to your hands while shaping them into pumpkins. If it’s still sticky and not holding its shape, then it’s still too warm. Give the cereal a few more minutes to cool and try again. Coating your hands another time in cooking spray before you start.

Shape the pumpkins- Take a handful of mixture and gently roll it into a ball. Then slightly flatten and shape the sides so it resembles a pumpkins. I promise, it doesn’t have to be perfect to still look cute!

Add the stem- Add a pretzel stick for the stem. You can also use a small chocolate candy such as a Tootsie Roll or Rolo.

Add leaves and vines- For a little extra color, add a small piece of green candy for the leaves.

You can also melt white chocolate with a bit of coconut oil and food coloring, then pipe leaves and little vines onto the pumpkins for added decoration.

Let them set- Place the finished pumpkins on parchment paper and allow them to fully set before serving.

*Bonus Idea- Add a little pumpkin spice! If you want these treats to taste like pumpkins rather than just looking like pumpkins, add a little pumpkin pie spice to the melted marshmallow mixture.

Storage and Leftovers

Store finished pumpkins in an air tight container at room temperature. Separate them by using parchment paper so they don’t stick together.

This easy no bake fall dessert is best enjoyed within a few days so they don’t become stale or hard.

Tips For Making Rice Krispie Treat Pumpkins

  • Allow the Krispie cereal and marshmallow mixture to cool slightly before shaping. If it’s too warm they will be too sticky to shape.
  • Spray your hands with cooking oil. The marshmallow mixture will stick to everything! A quick spray of cooking oil makes shaping them so much easier.
  • Don’t make them too big. Smaller pumpkins are easier to shape and easier for kids to eat.
  • Don’t overheat the marshmallows. Keep the heat on low while waiting for them to melt. Overcooking the marshmallows can result in firmer, harder treats.
  • Don’t pack them too tightly. Gently press the mixtures together rather than squeezing it. You want them soft and chewy.

Frequently Asked Question

Can I use any rice cereal?

Yes, any crispy rice cereal should work just fine.

How do I shape them into pumpkins?

Let the mixture cool enough to handle, spray your hands with cooking spray, then shape into balls. Gently flatten and add small ridges around the sides to give them that pumpkin look.

Why are my Krispie treats so sticky?

The marshmallow mixture is naturally sticky, especially when warm! Let them cool a bit longer. Then spray your hands with cooking oil and try shaping them into balls one more time.

Can I make these without food coloring?

Absolutely! They’ll still have the classic cereal color, but you can shape and decorate them just like a pumpkin. Using pretzels for stems and M&M’s for leaves.
