There is a huge mental load when it comes to camping, packing, and checklists and it doesn’t stop at what clothes to pack. It starts several days before you even start your trip with laundry and meal plans, and goes all the way until after you get home with dinner and possibly work and school lunches the next day.

So now that the kids are at an age where they can help pack I’m taking full advantage of it, because every little bit helps.

Of course I’ll do a double check to make sure they have everything they need, but besides it being helpful and time saving, it’s also great for them to get into the habit of thinking ahead and taking on a bit of responsibility. And since forgetting an extra pair of socks or a toy isn’t a huge deal, it’s a nice life lesson.

Kids Camping Checklist

I’ve found the easiest way of packing is to give each of our children their own plastic tote bin to fit what they need. It’s long, skinny, water resistant, and can easily be packed in the truck and stored on their bunkbeds in the camper. It’s also shallow enough that they can see what they have instead of digging everything out and making a mess.

Plus it keeps us from overpacking on a simple weekend getaway.

Kids Clothing Checklist

Talk with your kids about how many of each item they will need. A simple weekend trip won’t be such a big deal if they forget an extra pair of socks, but if you’re out hiking on a regular basis for several days those missing socks will get uncomfortable real quick.

Bedroom and Bathroom Checklist

The major part of the bedroom and bathroom checklist should be packed by an adult but they can help with the simple things they use everyday such as their toothbrush and toothpaste. Be sure to put a first aid kit on your own list along with any medicine they may need.

    • Sleeping bag
    • Pillow
    • Toothpaste
    • Toothbrush
    • Flashlight
    • Deodorant
    • Hair brush and ties

Toys and Activities

It’s always fun to see what kind of favorites the kids want to pack but after the 5th squishmallow we really need to put a stop to the madness. A lot of these activities can easily be packed by the kiddos but we’ll leave the heavy lifting to the grownups. So be sure to pack the bikes, helmets, and scooters yourself.

Road Trip Supplies

A few carefully thought out toys and activities are a must along with road trip supplies for the backpack to include books and car activities.

The kids load up their backpacks with fun must haves while I stock up on a few extras. With each camping trip I load up the backseat car organizer. Chances are you might have something similar but if you don’t, I highly recommend one!

    • Drawing pads
    • Music/ headphones
    • Road trip activity book
    • Waterbottle

Each kid gets their own car seat organizer and they are in charge of snack time and keeping entertained. Inside each one I’ll stock it up with a water bottle, granola bars, oranges/apples (easy clean up), a sweet treat (M&M’s), tablets, books, colored pencils, and mini toys.

With each camping trip the kids are getting better and better about bringing their favorites and sticking to the list. By giving the clear plastic tote a quick look through I can easily spot anything that is missing or give them a thumbs up to bring it over to the front door to be loaded.

Although us parents still have a lot packing and checklists before we head out, it’s wonderful that the kids are now getting involved with age appropriate chores that extend even to the great outdoors. Be sure to pack for your season and grab any of those big items you might need such as coats, hats, mittens, and of course the bikes!

I hope this simple kids packing checklist is helpful to you and be sure to write in any extras to fit your families personal needs. Happy camping!
