How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries
If you’re a chocolate and strawberry lover, it’s time to learn how to make chocolate covered strawberries, right at home. Whether it be for Valentines day, Mother’s Day, a baby shower or random Tuesday, chocolate covered strawberries are always a hit.
Ingredients
- 1 LB. Fresh strawberries
- 8 oz. Quality chocolate
- Toppings (optional)

Wash and Dry The Strawberries
You’ll want to wash and dry your strawberries with a paper towel. The chocolate will not stick properly if the strawberries are not fully dry. So be sure to let them dry completely.
What Type of Chocolate to Use
For the best chocolate covered strawberries you want to use quality chocolate. Bakers Chocolate is one of my favorites and easy to find.
For this recipe I used Bakers Semi-Sweet chocolate but you can also use milk chocolate, German chocolate or another brand of your liking.
Melt the chocolate one of two ways. In the microwave or using a double broiler.
How to Microwave Chocolate
In a microwave safe bowl, break the chocolate squares into pieces. Microwave at %50 power and stir every 15 seconds with a rubber spatula until melted.

How to Melt Chocolate Using a Double Broiler
You can also melt the chocolate using a double broiler. For those of you who are not familiar with what a double broiler is, it’s essentially two pots that fit one of top of the other. The bottom is filled with an inch or so of water and as the water heats up, the chocolate in the top part begins to melt.
You can also make your own double broiler with a small pot filled with an inch of water and a heat safe bowl. Remember to not let the water touch the bottom of your bowl.
Break the chocolate up and reserve a few squares to add in last. Melt your chocolate over low heat, stirring frequently with a rubber spatula. Remove from heat and stir in the remaining chocolate.

Dipping and Coating
Cover a cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Hold the top of the strawberry by the stem and dip into the melted chocolate. Coat evenly. Allow excess chocolate to drip off. Set on wax paper and repeat.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Toppings
While the chocolate is still wet, roll strawberries in additional toppings of choice.
- Chocolate shavings
- Graham cracker crumbs
- Coconut
- Sprinkles
- Chopped nuts
- Crushed Oreos or cookies

Chill in Refrigerator
Once you are done coating your strawberries, place them in the fridge to set.

Add White Chocolate Drizzle
Melt 4oz of white chocolate in the microwave or using a double broiler. Use a fork to drizzle the white chocolate on top of the strawberries or, if you want to be more precise and accurate, use a piping bag.

Storage Directions
Chocolate covered strawberries are best eaten within 48 hours. They can be kept on the countertop or in the refrigerator. If you do decide to put them in the refrigerator, place them on a paper towel and cover them lightly with plastic wrap. The paper towel will help keep moisture away, allowing them to stay fresh longer.
I would not recommend freezing them. As they thaw out the strawberries have a high chance of getting mushy.
Can you use frozen strawberries instead of fresh strawberries?
It’s best to use fresh strawberries as frozen ones have extra moisture in them that will affect the chocolate coating.

Helpful Tips
- Use room temperature strawberries for better chocolate adherence.
- Pat strawberries dry thoroughly to prevent chocolate from seizing.
- Work quickly during the dipping process to avoid premature hardening.
- Store in a cool, dry place for the best taste and texture.
With just a few ingredients you can make fresh chocolate covered strawberries right at home! And the entire process takes less time than it would to make two dozen cookies. Just to really put this easy treat in perspective.
