The kids are happy to help dice the apples and mix the ingredients but one thing that really drives them nuts is the waiting while it bakes. Eventually they go off together to play with their mini squishmallows or make a small twig village, and that’s exactly what we are looking for while camping. Kids playing in the woods and using their imagination.
Approximately 30 minutes later I’m calling them over and they are ready for a heaping spoonful of hot apple cobbler while we watch the campfire and sun setting in the distance.
But of course you know all this because you are out adventuring too.

Campfire Apple Cobbler
Half the battle of making a good campfire meal is having the right equipment and I’ve absolutely found my favorite way of cooking! This 3 in 1 Dutch oven and grill skillet is the only way I cook over the fire and it has become a staple that stays in the camper for the long haul.
Since it’s a dutch oven it makes it extra simple to use it as an oven over the grate. Although you’re supposed to use coals around and on top of the lid to cook, I’ve found that just using it over a grate, with the right heat underneath, works just perfect for our needs and keeps it extra easy when it comes to clean up.

Ingredients
- Apple Cobbler
- 2 honey crisp apples
- ⅓ cup water
- ¼ cup sugar
- Juice of ½ a lemon
- 1 TBS flour
- pinch of cinnamon
- Cobbler topping
- 1 cup flour
- 1 ½ tsp. baking powder
- ⅓ cup sugar
- ½ tsp. salt
- 6 TBS cold butter
- ⅓ cup milk
- sprinkling of sugar on top

Cooking Directions
For this recipe you’ll need a campfire with a cooking grate. Start the fire and allow the wood to catch and die down before beginning to cook.
We used this 3 in 1 cast iron dutch oven for cooking along with heat safe gloves to rotate and to lift the lid to check for doneness.

Apple mixture- In a bowl add two diced apples, ⅓ cup water, ¼ cup sugar, juice of half a lemon, 1 TBS flour and a pinch of cinnamon. Mix to combine.

Cobbler topping- In a separate bowl add 1 cup flour, 1 ½ tsp. baking powder, ⅓ cup sugar, and ½ tsp. salt. Mix to combine. Cut in 6 TBS cold butter using a fork until it resembles crumbs. Add ⅓ cup milk and mix together.
Cast iron dutch oven- Place a bit of butter in the pan and add the apple mixture to the cast iron skillet. Add biscuits mixture on top and sprinkle dough with a dusting of sugar. Cover with lid and place on grate over the campfire coals.
Or tin foil 8×8 pan method- For easier clean up you can instead pour apple mixture into an 8×8 tin foil pan. Top with biscuits and dust with sugar. Find 4 flat rocks and place on bottom of dutch oven to raise up the tin foil pan and allow the heat to circulate. Add 8×8 tin foil pain inside the dutch oven and cover with lid.

Bake- Bake in the dutch oven over the campfire for approximately 25-35 minutes. Using heat safe gloves check for doneness and continue to cook until biscuits are fully cooked through.
*Baking time will very based on the heat of the campfire and the amount of coals it is cooked over.
Serve- Remove from heat using heat safe gloves and allow to cool slightly. Serve with vanilla ice cream, whipped topping, toasty gooey marshmallows, or just as is. Enjoy!

Tips and Substitutions
Cooking and baking over a campfire with grate does take some practice and patience. There is a balance between the campfire being too big to cook on and too small to cook through. Cooking over glowing embers is best for safety. Cooking over direct flames can result in food quickly burning. Eventually the right amount of coals and temperature will come naturally.

- Always practice fire safety both while cooking on the campfire and using heat safe gloves and equipment.
- Make sure the fire isn’t too big or your dessert may burn. Cook over hot coals and only adding a small log at a time is best for a more even temperature.

Our campfire meal plans are expanding with every camping trip. Although S’mores are great, it’s fun to try something new and even shop the local farm stands and markets. With each farm stand we find fresh fruits and vegetables that are perfect for our camping dinners and desserts, and it’s always great meeting new faces and supporting local businesses.
Happy adventuring!
