Welcome to another addition of “didn’t we already make this?” Yes! and no. We do have a couple of similar recipes that include camping pizza (foil packet pizza and campfire pizza bites) but this one is a bit different.

Instead of pizza dough we are making this camping dinner using crescent rolls and mozzarella sticks. It honestly doesn’t get any easier than this and the kids loved it!

Crescent Roll Pizza Pockets

These Crescent roll pizza pockets started as a small idea on Tuesday afternoon. We were camping that following weekend and my wheels were already turning with our camping meal plan!

We have a couple of other pizza variations for the campfire but since this time we were camping at the beach in summer, I knew the humidity was going to take all of our energy.

So I decided to keep this meal extra simple and it turned out to be one of the family’s favorite dinner!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Campfire cooking during the spring and fall is by far the best way to spend some time enjoying nature. Low and slow coals simmer the stews (campfire chili recipe) and everyone is laying in a hammock nearby.

But when it’s hot our energy level is rock bottom, making an extra easy recipe all the more important.

  • 3 Simple ingredients
  • Comes together in minutes
  • No rolling dough!
  • Kids can help assemble
Ingredients laid out for Crescent roll pizza pockets.

Ingredients

Crescent Roll dough- We’re using two refrigerated Crescent roll cans of dough. It’s easy to pack for camping, premade, precut, and perfect for pizza pockets.

Mozzarella cheese sticks- Grab 8 mozzarella cheese sticks and throw them in the cooler. They are easy to pack and since we are cutting them in half, eight will make 16 individual pizza pockets. Maybe throw a couple extra in there just for snacks later.

Jar of pizza sauce- Keep it simple with a jar of pizza sauce and use it for dipping. Dipping instead of adding it to the crescent rolls makes things less messy and still gives you all the pizza flavor you need.

Steps 1-4 cooking directions. Gather ingredients, roll and stuff with cheese, cook over coals.

Campfire Directions

Start your campfire so that it has a chance to die down for cooking over nice, hot coals.

Prepare the Crescent roll dough- Separate the crescent roll triangles.

Add mozzarella- Cut a mozzarella cheese stick in half and place towards the wide end of the dough.

Roll and seal- Roll the dough into the classic croissant shape and seal the ends so that the melted cheese doesn’t leak out while cooking.

Steps 5-8. Cook till golden brown, cook over coals, dip in pizza sauce.

Cook over a campfire- You’ll want to cook these crescent roll pizza pockets over coals and not direct flames.

The easiest way we’ve found for all of our campfire cooking is by using a 3 in 1 cast iron skillet. It’s so versatile and turns into an oven to be cooked on the campfire grate.

Place the cask iron skillet over the campfire grate and add a bit of cooking oil. Cook in batches and add half of the pizza pockets so that each one has enough room to cook.

Place lid on top and allow to cook approximately 4-5 minutes. Remove lid using heat safe gloves and flip each crescent roll pizza. Rotate the skillet and place the lid back on the top and cook another 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and cooked through.

Serve- Allow to cool a bit before serving since the cheese will be very hot! And enjoy with a bit of pizza sauce.
