Tri Tip Roast-On the Grill

Tri Tip Roast-On the Grill

All year round you can find us grilling on the deck, and with this tri tip roast, its no different. Its jucy, tender and melts in your mouth.

Tri tip roast on the grill is one of our favorite dishes to make. Pair it with grilled potatoes, corn on the cob and a nice salad and you have yourself a delicious meal that you really won’t want to share with the kids- but you should.

Tri Tip Roast-Dry Rub

Now, my husband is the man in charge of the dry rub. The first time we made this I had my steak sauce ready to go. One bite into it, I knew I couldn’t ruin this beauty with steak sauce. (and I love steak sauce!) No, this rub is perfect for our tastes. 2lb Tri tip roast
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 3 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
Coat all sides of the tri tip with this rub and set in the fridge for at least 3 hours.

How to Grill a Tri Tip Roast

One hour before grilling set the tri tip back on the counter to bring it up to room temperature.

Preheat grill on high heat. Add a little olive oil to the top and sear each side for 5-7 minutes over direct heat. Continue cooking with indirect medium-high heat (about 400 degrees) for and additional 20-25 minutes.

The meat should reach 130-135 degrees at the thickest part.

Remove from grill and let it rest covered in foil for 15 minutes before slicing.

How long to Cook Tri Tip Roast

The tri tip roast itself takes about 50 minutes to cook on the grill. Add in the rub marinating for a few hours, letting it come up to room temperature and finally letting it rest for 15 minutes, and you’re looking at about 5 hours.

But if you can manage your time correctly, it only takes one hour to grill, and its completely worth it. This tri tip roast on the grill will have you reaching for thirds and lying to your kids that its spicy, so they leave it alone.
